Vocab 1 - 8/30/10

blandly - adv - lacking strong features or characteristics and therefore uninteresting
He blandly ate the sandwich, showing no intrest in the specially prepared meal.
gaunt - adj - lean and haggard, usually because of suffering/hunger
The man was gaunt from surviving in the wild with no food supplies for two weeks.
indolently - adv - wanting to avoid activity or exertion; lazy
Jade indolently skipped studying for the next day's test.
scruples - noun - feelings of doubt or hesitation with regard to the morality or propriety of a course      of action
There were no scruples when the assassin killed his target.
gossamer - noun - used to refer to something very light, thin, and insubstantial or delicate, like a cobweb
The gossamer web hung lightly on the old trunk.
palpable - adj - able to be touched or felt
The fear was palpable in the air.
nocturnal - adj - occurring or active at night
College kids are nocturnal beings, awake only at night.
futile - adj - incapable of producing any useful result; pointless
It is futile to escape the horrors of life.
furtive - adj - attempting to avoid notice or attention, typically because of guilt or a belief the discovery would lead to trouble; secretive
The girl glanced furtively at her boss after spilling coffee on the rug.
reciprocate - vb - respond to a gesture or action by making a corresponding one
She reciprocated the gesture by slapping her friend.
naive - adj - a person or action showing a lack of wisdom, or judgment
