BNW Journal Ch. 6 pt. 1

Summary:
The chapter opens up with Lenina arguing and reminiscing with herself about different men she had gone places with. Now, after setting the date, she is rethinking going on a weekend to New Mexico. Compared to a boring weekend with normal Benito, a good weekend with strange Bernard seems almost not as good. Lenina describes him as disquieting, which means she senses something different about him. Although she doesn’t quite realize it, the difference between him, and most, is his questioning the people and not participating due to his discomfort.
They get in to a small argument after flying to Denmark per Lenina’s wishes to see Women’s wrestling. Bernard is gloomy because he wanted to be alone with Lenina and she tries to force ice-cream soma on him to improve his dismal mood. On the way back to London, they stop above the tumulus ocean. Bernard upsets Lenina with talk of individualism and going against what is perceived as good for society.  He solution to what she considers bad, hurtful thoughts is soma. She suggest he take some to get rid of these type of thoughts. He is angry and decides to give up reasoning with her for now. So Bernard takes soma and lets the subject rest.
The next day they go together somewhere, it doesn’t expressly say. Bernard once again upsets Lenina with talk of uniqueness. He speaks about how adult aren’t really adults because they just follow what everyone else does, like infants.

Lit. Elements:
The most powerful symbols in this .5 of a chapter were rather hidden. The dialogue mentions, but does not emphasize 33them. When they pause above the English channel, the sea and moon are mentioned. The sea is a symbol of change and restlessness, both of which Bernard is going through. It is also a foreshadow for events to come. The moon is a symbol of change as well, but it also is used for a symbol of darkness, dreams, and magic. Bernard is dreaming about change, he hasn’t yet taken the first steps toward it, but it obvious that something will happen and he will be put into action.

Vocabulary:
Archness –noun- deliberately playful and teasing
